Reliance Telecom moves court on 2G charges

New Delhi, Oct 24 (IANS) Reliance Telecom Monday said it has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court challenging the charges framed last week in connection with the allocation of second generation (2G) spectrum in 2008.

“Reliance Telecom has today filed a writ petition in the honourable Delhi High Court, seeking quashing of charges framed against the company by a special judge on Oct 22,” the company said in a regulatory filing.

“The company has named the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Department of Telecom (DoT), the Ministry of Law and Justice and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India as respondents,” it added .

The bail petition of the three Reliance Group executives are listed for hearing before the Supreme Court Oct 31. The trial is slated to start Nov 11.

Soon after the charges were framed Saturday, Reliance Telecom had said this was a just a preliminary exercise and did not amount to admission of guilt.

There are 17 accused in the case, including three companies and 14 individuals, led by former telecom minister A. Raja.

“Reliance Telecom and the three executives are very confident of mounting a successful defence in trial proceedings against the charges framed,” the company said, referring to Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair.

“The substantive charges framed on Reliance Telecom and the executives remain limited only to the alleged abetment to cheating by others, as part of an alleged conspiracy,” the company added.

“The observations made hereinabove are tentative, and do not tantamount to expression of opinion on the merit of the case in any manner,” the company said, quoting the judge.
