Regulatory body urged for electronic mediaSeptember 20th, 2008 - 9:09 pm ICT by IANS
Kozhikode, Sep 20 (IANS) Press Council of India chairman justice G.N. Ray said Saturday that the government was not keen on entrusting it with the regulation of the electronic media. He said there is a need for a regulatory body for the electronic media along the lines of the one for print media.
The electronic media did not come under the ambit of the council as it came into being after the Press Council was constituted, he told reporters.
Ray also called for the constitution of a media commission in place of the Press Commission so that it can give recommendations on constituting a regulatory body for the electronic media.
Commenting on reportage of cases under police investigation or under trial, Ray said that “trial by media” could result in people losing faith in the police and the judiciary.
