Record power generation by Bhakra, Pong
September 21st, 2011 - 8:33 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Sep 21 (IANS) The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) Wednesday said it had achieved a record power generation of over 7,000 million units (MU) in the filling season (April-September) of the reservoirs of its dams.
Cumulative power generation of the year till date is not only the highest in the last decade but is also 23 percent more than the target of 5,670 MUs set by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), BBMB joint director V.P. Sharma said here.
The BBMB manages the 225-metre-high Bhakra Dam and Pong Dam, besides other hydro-electric projects in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
“During the year 2011-12 i.e. from April 1 to Sep 20, which marks the end of filling season for BBMB reservoirs, besides filling Bhakra and Pong reservoirs to the brim, record power generation of 7,000 million units was achieved,” Sharma said.
The Gobind Sagar and Pong Dam reservoirs are among the biggest in the country, with respective capacities of 9,620 and 8,570 million cubic meters.
“Generation of additional 1,330 MUs by BBMB has led to reduction in purchase of power by partner states at higher rates, thereby saving more than Rs.400 crore at prevailing rate of sale of power,” he said.
The partner states in BBMB include Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajashthan, Chandigarh and Delhi.
