Record generation by Himachal hydropower unit
June 5th, 2010 - 4:29 pm ICT by IANSShimla, June 5 (IANS) Hydroelectric power generation in Himachal Pradesh touched a record 1,366 million units in the first two months of this fiscal, an official said here Saturday.
“The Nathpa-Jhakri station has achieved a record generation of 1,366 million units in April and May against 1,086 million units generated last year (2009),” H.K. Sharma, chairman and managing director of Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd(SJVNL), the company that owns and operates the plant, told IANS.
He said the generation was 138 million units more than the target of 1,228 million units. Sharma attributed the optimum generation to sufficient flow in the Satluj river on which the project is located in Kinnaur district.
SJVNL, a joint venture between the central government and the state, is supplying electricity to nine northern states.
Last month it got listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange.
SJVNL, which commenced commercial generation from its six units of 250 MW each in 2003, is executing a 412 MW Rampur hydroelectric project in the state.
“The Rampur project would be commissioned by 2013,” Sharma said.
At present, the company is implementing 10 hydropower projects to add 4,000 MW of capacity. It is also executing one project each in Nepal and Bhutan.
The Nathpa-Jhakri project generates about 38 million units daily, which is supplied to Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
