Rebel Maruti union leaders resign, get hefty dues
November 5th, 2011 - 12:01 am ICT by IANSManesar, Nov 4 (IANS) Automobile major Maruti Suzuki (MSIL) has reached a settlement with the rebel worker leaders who had headed a three-phase labour agitation at the company’s Manesar plant.
“The suspended workers have tendered their resignations. Their dues have been given to them,” senior company official told IANS Friday.
According to the official, all the 30 suspended workers at the company’s Manesar facility have tendered their resignations.
The exit of the rebel leaders comes after an agreement was reached between the company, labour union and the Haryana government on ending the recent strike on Oct 21.
“Under the agreement, 30 workers were suspended, while the rest of the work force was again inducted,” the official said.
The accord which was brokered by the Haryana government stated that the decision on 30 suspended co-workers was to be taken after the inquiry.
Workers at the Manesar plant — which produces some 1,200 vehicles a day on an average — went on strike Oct 7, demanding the reinstatement of 44 colleagues suspended after impasse that had ended seven days earlier.
The agitation was called off after the management decided to take back 64 workers who were suspended during the three-phase agitation. 1,200 casual workers were also retained.
Those who have tendered in their resignations include union president Sonu Gujjar, general secretary Shiv Kumar, Arvind and Rishipal.
“A decision at the general body meeting was taken unanimously to take voluntary retirement, we resigned and took our funds,” general secretary Shiv Kumar said.
“The decision on 30 suspended co-workers was to be taken after an inquiry. All our leaders also got their Diwali bonanza apart from dues worth Rs.40 lakh to Rs.15 lakh each,” Ram Mehar, a worker at Manesar plant, said.
The company has two facilities — at Gurgaon and Manesar — with a collective capacity to produce 1.2 million vehicles annually.
