Raipur shops to remain open till 10 p.m.July 12th, 2008 - 1:50 am ICT by IANS
Raipur, July 12 (IANS) There is good news for shoppers in this Chhattisgarh capital as the government may allow shops to remain open for two more hours by extending the closure time to 10 p.m., a senior government official said Friday. “The state government is seriously considering a proposal of the traders to change the existing norms to allow the shops and business establishments to remain open till 10 p.m. ,” said K.D.P. Rao, labour commissioner and secretary with the department of labour.
As per the existing norms, shops and business establishments have to conduct business from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industries has been lobbying for several months seeking an extension of business hours.
“The living standards of people in the state capital have changed and they prefer shopping in the late evening after a day’s hectic work,” Rao said during a meeting of traders here at the Bombay Market office of the Chamber.
However, the labour commissioner urged the traders to strictly follow the existing norms and not employ child labourers, relieve lady employees by 8 p.m. and ensure that a worker does not work for more than eight hours a day.
