Mumbai, Aug 1 (IANS) Train services between Maharashtra and Gujarat were briefly disrupted Monday as heavy rains continued to lash several parts of the two neighbouring states since Saturday, officials said here Monday.

According to a Western Railway officials, train services on the western line had to be halted for more than an hour as the tracks were partially submerged in water.

“The problem has been taken care of now and the services have been restored. But the movement of trains is a bit slow,” the official said.

Many parts of Mumbai, Thane district and parts of Navi Mumbai are also facing waterlogging due to heavy rains.

Low-lying areas of northern Mumbai like Ghatkopar, Borivili, Andheri, Dadar, Santacruz and Khar faced waterlogging, leaving many thousand people inconvenienced. Some parts of adjacent Thane district also faced severe flooding.

Mumbai’s local train commuters complained of a delay of 30-45 minutes during the peak office hours.

Many parts of Thane city and the district were submerged since Friday night. The Bhatan bridge that connects Virar township to around 30 villages was also completely under water, cutting off all contact with the villages.

The townships of Bhiwandi, Kalyan and other low-lying areas of Thane reported incessant showers and flooding in the regions with rivers overflowing. Also, the water level at various dams of the district witnessed a steep rise, water at two of them crossing the storage level.

North Mumbai has recorded more than 225 mm rainfall in the last 48 hours, while south Mumbai has had over 150 mm rainfall during the same period.

According to weather officials, frequent spells of rain would be witnessed in parts of the city and suburbs till Wednesday. Heavy rainfall and thundershowers are also expected in Thane and many parts of Maharashtra.
