Railways plans massive development of vacant land
March 11th, 2011 - 10:38 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, March 11 (IANS) The railways plans to utilise some of its 1.13 lakh acres of vacant land to set up factories, cold storages and perishable cargo centres, Minister of State for Railways Bharatsinh Solanki told the Rajya Sabha Friday.
The plan also includes construction of multi-modal logistic parks and auto hubs.
The Indian Railway network now occupies a total land area of about 10.65 lakh acres.
“Ninety per cent of this land is directly under railway tracks, yards, workshops and allied infrastructure. The vacant land, measuring about 1.13 lakh acres is mostly in the form of a narrow strip along tracks which railways has been utilising, or plan to utilise, for its expansion,” Solanki said in a written reply.
“The Railways also plans to utilise its vacant land, not required for its immediate operational use, for setting up of rail coach and component factories, loco component factories, wagon factories, coach rehabilitation and wagon repair workshops, multi-modal logistic parks, auto hubs, cold storage and perishable cargo centres etc,” he said.
