Qatar ready to increase LNG supplies to India

New Delhi, Jan 14 (IANS) Qatar has expressed its readiness to increase the supply of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) to India.This was conveyed during the two-day meeting of the India-Qatar high level monitoring mechanism (HLMM) held here Jan 13-14.
The meeting was co-chaired by T.K.A. Nair, principal secretary to the prime minister, and Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah, Qatar’s minister of state for international cooperation.
The HLMM was set up after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Qatar in November 2008. The committee monitors the progress in implementation of areas of cooperation.
“In the hydrocarbons sector, Qatar has conveyed readiness to increase supply of LNG to meet India’s requirements and to facilitate the participation of Indian companies in the oil and gas sector in Qatar,” said a press released issued by the ministry of external affairs.
Besides, the Qatar Investment Authority will consider investing in NTPC’s Kaymukalam expansion project.
Qatar has “highlighted its interest in getting access to the public sector undertaking’s disinvestments via the Anchor investor route,” said the release.
India welcomed Qatar’s proposal for wide-ranging cooperation in the area of banking supervision and exchange of information to combat money laundering and terror financing.
“The joint committee for promoting investment into India as well as the joint working group on fertiliser will be meeting soon,” the release said.
The next HLMM meeting will be held in Doha in the first quarter of 2012.
