Punjab to seek PM’s help in water dispute

Chandigarh, June 26 (IANS) Punjab will seek the central government’s intervention to end its water row with adjoining states, it was resolved after an all-party meeting here Saturday.
A controversy had arisen in June after Punjab demanded royalty for the water supplied by it to Haryana.
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda questioned the logic of royalty saying Punjab was not producing the water.
Saturday’s meeting was attended by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Akali Dal president and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, Punjab Congress president Mohinder Kaypee, Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Ashwini Sharma and BJP MP from Amritsar Navjot Singh Sidhu among others.
Badal told reporters after the meeting that leaders of various parties had agreed to meet the prime minister with the demand that water in Punjab be saved.
“Our water table is going down. We do not have enough water to share with other states. We will seek the centre’s intervention in this regard,” Badal said.
Punjab, which supplies nearly 50 percent of the foodgrain stock to the national kitty, largely relies on irrigation.
