Punjab, railways to tie up for building bridges

Chandigarh, Nov 17 (IANS) The railway ministry has decided to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Punjab that will enable the state government to build portions of railway overbridge (ROB) projects, an official said Wednesday.
The partnership decision was taken at a meeting of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal with senior railway ministry officials in New Delhi.
Once the MOU is signed, the public works department of the Punjab government will be able to execute portions of ROB projects to expedite the construction.
Badal said he has already met Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and Railway Board officials and they have agreed to the proposal.
Badal said construction of 28 ROBs and railway under-bridges (RUBs) was underway in Punjab. Of tehse, 22 projects have been completed at a cost of Rs.392 crore till October.
He said that most of the remaining ROBs and RUBs will be completed by March 2011.
He added that 22 other ROBs and RUBs were being built at various locations across the state at a cost of Rs.417 crore.
