Chandigarh, May 9 (IANS) Punjab has procured nearly 103 lakh tonnes of wheat this season, close on the heels of Haryana crossing year’s total arrival of wheat in its mandis, officials said Monday.

During the same period last year, 101.31 lakh tonnes wheat were procured in the state.

The official said government agencies had procured over 99.8 percent of the total wheat arrival in Punjab so far. The six government agencies include five from the Punjab government and the centre’s Food Corporation of India (FCI).

Ferozepur district led in wheat procurement with 12.23 lakh tonnes followed by Sangrur (9.94 lakh tonnes) and Ludhiana (8.35 lakh tonnes).

In neighbouring Haryana, 64.11 lakh tonnes of wheat has been procured so far. This is higher than last year’s collection of 63.47 lakh tonnes.
