Punjab Infotech, Rayat-Bahra tie-up for skill development
July 21st, 2011 - 6:27 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, July 21 (IANS) Punjab Infotech, a state government enterprise, has tied up with leading education group, the Rayat-Bahra Group, for the “first of its kind centre in India”, focusing on core skills development of youth.
The tie-up was announced here Thursday by Rayat-Bahra Group chairman Gurvinder Singh Bahra and Punjab Infotech managing director Rakesh Verma.
The Rayat-Bahra Punjab Infotech Centre of Excellence (RBPICOE), 20 km from Chandigarh, would be inaugurated Saturday.
“India will face an acute shortage of skilled manpower to the tune of 35 million by 2020. RBPICOE will house functional clusters like automotive, electronics, IT, pharma, hydropower and financial services to meet the talent crunch,” Bahra said.
“It is a big initiative where major industry players are partners in churning out skilled professionals to meet with ever expanding need of industry. The skill development is enabled along with active industry participation, wherein students will have guaranteed jobs with a promise of internship. This centre is expected to generate employment for at least 3,000 students in a year during the first phase,” Rakesh Verma said.
Bahra said that the RBPICOE is a fully functional automotive skill development centre. It has tied up with renowned manufacturers to design, develop and run various skill development programs aimed at fulfilling talent crunch.
The partners to this programme include big names like Volvo-Eicher Commercial Vehicles Limited and a consortium of 40 manufacturers, including Maruti-Suzuki India Limited, Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi) and Royal Enfield Motors Limited.
Verma said that skills training will not only be provided to youth with basic qualifications like having passed class 10th, 12th or diploma holders, but also to illiterate, under privileged and school dropouts.
