Chandigarh, Oct 19 (IANS) Inching their way towards another bumper paddy crop this season, Punjab and Haryana have procured over six million tonnes of paddy in the first 19 days of the procurement process, an official said here Tuesday.

In Punjab, government agencies and private millers had procured 4.8 million tonnes of paddy till Tuesday morning.

Over 97 percent of the total procurement in Punjab was done by the government agencies in over 1,700 procurement centres across the state.

Punjab’s Ferozepur district was leading in procurement operations with over 676,000 tonnes, followed by Jalandhar with over 460,000 tonnes and Faridkot with over 388,000 tonnes.

In neighbouring Haryana, out of the total arrival of 1.3 million tonnes of paddy in grain markets, nearly 1.1 million tonnes was procured by government agencies while the rest was purchased by private millers.

Kurukshetra, Karnal and Kaithal districts were among the top three districts in procurement in the state.
