Punjab, Haryana procure over 10 lakh tonnes paddy
October 7th, 2011 - 7:11 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Oct 7 (IANS) Government agencies in Punjab and Haryana have procured over 10 lakh tonnes of paddy in the first six days of the procurement season which started Oct 1, food and supplies department officials said here Friday.
The procurement this year in Punjab has been much less than in the same period last year.
“Government agencies and private millers procured more than 582,365 tonnes of paddy till last evening against 1,136,992 tonnes procurement of previous year (2010),” a spokesman of the Punjab food and supplies department said here Friday.
In Haryana, government agencies have procured over 4.41 lakh tonnes of paddy out of the total arrival of nearly 4.6 lakh tonnes, Food and Supplies Minister Mahender Pratap Singh said.
Kurukshetra district in Haryana and Tarn Taran district in Punjab were leading in procurement of paddy so far.
