Aug 3, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Procter & Gamble Co. on Thursday extended its recall of pet foods and expanded the horizon of recall as well. The original June recall of Iams canned cat food now extends to some other cat and dog foods that the company says might be contaminated with salmonella bacteria. The Thursday voluntary recall was done keeping in mind the severe effect that the consumption of the products might have in the pets. The company maintained that the products were being recalled as a precautionary measure “because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella”. However, Procter & Gamble mentioned that it has received no complaints about the product till date. The products that are lined up for recall include Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas, Eukanuba Pure, Eukanuba Naturally Wild and Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin.
The exposure to Salmonella might cause long term health hazard in both animals and men and the Thursday extension and expansion of the voluntary recall is for all the more serious reasons. The original June Voluntary recall of pet food by Procter & Gamble was related to nutritional deficiencies in products concerned. The food then could have led to symptoms like vomiting, seizures and weight loss. The symptoms that could emerge on consumption of Salmonella infested pet foods are vomiting, abdominal pain and in severe cases bloody diarrhea.
The company had advised customers who have bought those recalled products to discard them immediately. The Salmonella can affect not only the pets that consume it but also human beings who handle the recalled food. It has also urged the veterinary clinics and retail stores to pull the products out of its shelves.
