New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS) Continuous power shortages in the national capital region (NCR) may bring down its industrial production by 35-40 percent, an industry lobby said Tuesday.

“Power shortages may reduce industrial production in NCR by nearly 35-40 percent,” said the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

“Due to power and water shortages, the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will severely be impacted,” it added.

According to Assocham, electricity demand of industrial locations in Gurgaon in Haryana has gone beyond 400 MW against its availability of 200 MW.

“As a result, industrial units in Ghaziabad, Sahibabad, Mohan Nagar, Loni and in the Meerut belt are suffering daily load shedding ranging 8-12 hours,” said D.S. Rawat, secretary general, Assocham.

In Faridabad, the power demand, particularly for industrial locations, is 600-700 MW against the availability of 300-400 MW. Industrial units are facing daily power cuts of 5-8 hours.

Noida region suffers 100-200 MW of power shortage each day.

The report said the power shortages were also eroding productivity and efficiency in hospitals, police stations, post offices, banks, educational institutions and corporate offices.

This situation could lead to “alarming situation” if it was not tackled, it said.
