Power restored in most of north Mumbai (Lead)
November 18th, 2010 - 10:19 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, Nov 18 (IANS) Power was restored to most parts of north Mumbai after the region plunged into darkness following a power breakdown, officials said.
The power disruption was reported around 6 p.m., and lasted from 20 minutes to two hours in various areas of the city and its northern suburbs. It was attributed to a supply grid problem at Dahanu Power Plant, which is the point of electricity supply to north Mumbai.
“The problem has been taken care of and power supply restored,” an official said.
The sudden blackout hit some sections of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
An airport official said that back-up power was activated to maintain essential services like x-ray screening and runway lights. There was no immediate impact of the power breakdown on flight operations, he said.
The blackout inconvenienced hundreds of people living in tall buildings. People either had wait for the power supply to resume or climb up or descend scores of floors as lifts were stalled.
The power failure also slowed down the evening north-bound traffic as streetlights and highway lights went off.
Officials said that the suburbs from Bandra to Mira Road (Thane district) were hit by the blackout.
