Ludhiana (Punjab), Nov 27 (IANS) A man is on the run after he was booked for trying to deposit bogus income tax refund cheques worth Rs.47 lakh in Punjab’ Ludhiana city, police said Saturday.
According to police, on the complaint of Ludhiana income tax department they have booked Ramesh Kumar, who is absconding.
“Ramesh, who resides in Anand Nagar colony here, had gone to deposit refund cheques worth Rs.47 lakh at a State Bank of India branch earlier this week,” said a police official.
“The cheques also had the stamp of the income tax department. But when the bank officials asked Ramesh to give Income Tax Advice Number (ITAN), he failed to give it. Following this, the bank manager informed the income tax department and police,” police said.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of involvement of income tax officials in the case.
Ludhiana Assistant Commissioner of Police Raj Kumar said: “The role of income tax department’s officials will also be probed.”
Ludhiana, an industrial city in Punjab, is around 100 km from the state capital Chandigarh.
