New Delhi, June 22 (IANS) The union home ministry Wednesday forwarded to the finance ministry’s department of revenue a plea made under the transparency law seeking a probe into alleged disproportionate assets of former chief justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan and his family members.
Balakrishnan is currently heading the National Human Rights Commission.
The ministry forwarded the petition to secretary, department of revenue, with a suggestion to get it probed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
The move by the ministry came in the wake of an opinion given by the law ministry to refer the right to information (RTI) petition filed by a person in Kerala to the department of revenue.
On Feb 18, the apex court bench headed by Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia asked Attorney General G. Vahanvati to submit the status report on the action taken by the home ministry into a complaint alleging that Balakrishnan and his family members made financial gains during his tenure as the chief justice of India.
The complaint was made by M. Furquann to President Pratibha Patil. The complaint was then sent to the home ministry.
RTI activist Subhash Chandra Agarwal has also moved several petitions seeking details on the income and assets of Balakrishnan.
