Plant official killed as workers torch vehicle (Lead)
March 3rd, 2011 - 9:09 pm ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, March 3 (IANS) A senior official of a private steel plant died of burn injuries Thursday after a group of dismissed workers set his vehicle on fire in Orissa’s Bolangir district, police said.
The incident took place near Titilagarh town, about 400 km from here.
District Superintendent of Police A.K. Sarangi said some workers stopped R.S. Ray, deputy general manager of GKW Ltd’s Powmex Steels division, and set his car on fire when he was on his way home for lunch.
He was initially taken to a nearby hospital. Later he was shifted to Bolangir town where doctors declared him dead. Hospital doctor Usharani Das said Ray had suffered 90 percent burn injuries.
The driver of the vehicle managed to escape without any injury. Sarangi said some workers were unhappy with Ray for serving them termination notices Wednesday.
