Plans to meet pulses shortfall: Officials
September 26th, 2011 - 8:31 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 26 (IANS) The government has prepared a contingency plan to meet the shortfall in pulses production through area expansion and productivity enhancement in Rabi (winter) sowing 2011-12, officials said Monday.
As per the data on area under pulses during Kharif 2011, there is a shortfall of 10.89 lakh hectare area coverage as against the last Kharif season. Less acreage during Kharif 2011 may lead to a shortfall of 0.70 million tonnes in pulses, said agriculture ministry officials.
Pulses covered under the scheme are pigeon pea, gram, pea and lentil.
The target is to achieve an additional production of 2.78 million tonnes during the ensuing Rabi season and offset the loss of Kharif season. An additional allocation of Rs.80 crore has been made for the purpose, the officials said.
