Petrol price hike: Strike planned in Bengal Monday
January 16th, 2011 - 10:10 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Jan 16 (IANS) Protesting against the latest petrol price hike, Communist Party of India-Marxist’s labour arm Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has called a three-hour public transport strike in West Bengal Monday. The strike will begin at noon, CITU state president Shyamal Chakraborty told mediapersons here Sunday.
He said private vehicles have been exempted from the strike, but motorists were welcome to participate.
Attacking the Trinamool Congress, the principal opposition party in Left Front-ruled West Bengal, Chakraborty said it was hoodwinking the people through its double-speak.
“Sometimes they say they are not consulted before such decisions. At other times, they say they have protested. But they merrily give consent to such hikes,” he said.
Trinamool, the second largest partner of the United Progressive Alliance government, complained earlier in the day that it had not been consulted before the hike was announced.
The party said it would organise protest rallies and meetings against the decision.
