Pet food recall expanded due to fear of salmonella contamination
August 3rd, 2010 - 7:37 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattToronto, Aug 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Procter and Gamble has increased its pet food recall to include some specialized dry pet food and veterinary dry pet food because of the scare of a salmonella contamination in the foods.
The recall was not initiated by an outbreak, since there has not been any reported sickness linked to salmonella as yet.
The list however does not include canned foods, treats/biscuits and supplements. The list affects most of the cat and dog dry foods that are marketed in the United States and Canada. Most of the products were sold in veterinary clinics and other specialty pet retailer shops throughout Canada and United States.
According to the company, all the affected products were manufactured at a single facility. The recall is in consultation with the Foods and Drugs Administration in the United States.
The full list is available at the company’s website and it includes Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas, Eukanuba Naturally Wild, Eukanuba Pure and Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin. The company warned that anyone who has handled the affected products risk being infected with the bacteria.
The statement said anyone who has any of the affected products to discard the product immediately. The bacteria can be fatal in pets, if they are left untreated. Some of the symptoms of an infected pet include decreased appetite, bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting.
