Ranchi, April 14 (IANS) More than 90 percent of the houses in Ranchi are constructed without any map clearance from the authorities, the state government informed the Jharkhand High Court Wednesday.
“There are around 1.7 lakh houses in Ranchi and over 1.5 lakh have been constructed without any map clearance,” the state government said, adding that “it would not be possible to demolish all the houses constructed without maps”.
The court was also informed that the government was planning to regularise the houses constructed without maps by slapping fines on the owners.
On a directive of the Jharkhand High Court, a demolition drive is going on in the state. The drive has affected people in many ways. First, there are those who constructed houses on government land. Then, those who constructed them on green land, and, third, those who constructed their houses without maps.
The state government has made it clear that houses constructed on government land would be demolished.
“The government is planning to bring an ordinance to help those people who constructed their houses without maps and those who constructed them on green land,” an official told IANS.
Over 4,000 illegal structures have been demolished in the state in the past three weeks on the directives of the Jharkhand High Court. Over one lakh people have become homeless in the state.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition parties have demanded that the rehabilitation process be completed before illegal structures are demolished.
Deputy Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who also holds the urban development ministry, has promised that the displaced will be rehabilitated in a month.
