Over 500 Himachal villages to get banks

Shimla, July 4 (IANS) Various public-sector banks have identified 532 villages in Himachal Pradesh for extension of banking services, an official said Monday.

“The banks have identified 532 villages in the state having population of more than 1,000 people for extending banking services under the second phase of the Financial Inclusion Plan 2013,” Chief Secretary Rajwant Sandhu said.

Inaugurating the 120th state-level bankers meeting, she said the banks have surpassed the targets under annual credit plan for the fiscal 2010-11, witnessing a 117 percent increase.

The chief secretary asked banks to enhance the flow of credit to agriculture and cover all the farmer households under the Kisan Credit Card scheme.

Executive director of UCO Bank Ajai Kumar, who presided over the meeting, said the state has 1,489 branches of various bank. Out of this, 1,213 branches are in rural areas.
