New Delhi, May 16 (IANS) The Delhi Metro sold over 36,000 smart cards, which allow commuters to avoid long queues in purchasing the travel tokens, during the “Smart Card Week” May 9-15, a Metro official said Monday.

“On an average, the sale of new Smart Cards was about 27,000 every day in 20 metro stations. During the Smart Card Week, about 9,426 extra cards were sold taking the total smart card sales to 36,426,” Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.

During the Smart Card Week, intended to promote and popularise extensive use of the cards, special counters were set up by the DMRC at 20 Metro stations that witness the maximum footfall, including Kashmere Gate, Rajiv Chowk, Laxmi Nagar, Anand Vihar and Chandni Chowk.

The counters displayed banners and advertisements highlighting the 10 percent discount in fares and other benefits of card usage.

According to Delhi Metro, at present over 60 percent of passengers, numbering 900,000, use smart cards on a regular basis.

“The Smart Card Week is an initiative to increase this figure substantially to a level similar to that of the other Metro systems like Singapore and Hong Kong, where almost 100 percent of Metro users rely on smart cards,” Dayal added.
