Orissa told to tackle agrarian crisis

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS) Orissa has been advised to take remedial measures to address agrarian distress, Minster of State for Agriculture K.V. Thomas said Friday.
The minister told Rudra Narayan Pany in the Rajya Sabha that the Orissa government stated that 50 alleged suicides by those engaged in farming activities had been reported in the state’s media.

But he quoted the Orissa government as claiming that none of the suicides could be attributed to agrarian reasons.

“The state governments are generally vested with power under various schemes to take effective steps to address important issues pertaining to agriculture sector and to ameliorate the condition of farmers,” he said in a written statement.

“The government of Orissa has been advised to take appropriate remedial measures to address agrarian distress, if any.”
