New Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) Lauding the Tihar Jail’s administration, Minister of State for Home Affairs Jitendra Singh said Monday the environment and opportunities provided to its inmates are incomparable.

Inaugurating a spice unit at Tihar sub-jail number 2 here, he said: “Tihar has turned out to be something I had never imagined. It is unlike any other jail in the country. I wish all the jails of the country could emulate Tihar and provide environment and opportunity to its inmates which one can get here.”

Singh, an MP from Alwar, also said that the first time offenders should be dealt with leniently, but added these were his personal views.

“I also feel that the first-timers should be dealt with leniently and that the government should reconsider their cases for some special concessions,” he said.

The minister also noted that the condition at various prisons across India are extremely bad and inmates at few places are “treated like animals”.

“Like Tihar Jail, reforms are must at those prisons,” he said, adding: “I have came here to steal the reforms and and administration’s initiatives to make thing happen here.”

During the event, Tihar Jail Director General Neeraj Kumar said that the spices manufactured at the Tihar Jail will be sold at various outlets in district courts, Kendriya Bhandar, the Select City Walk Mall in Saket, and Tihar outlets under the brand name “TJ’s Spices”.
