Olympic torch relay led to huge losses: AssochamApril 18th, 2008 - 10:47 pm ICT by admin
New Delhi, April 18 (IANS) Widespread traffic bottlenecks caused by the Olympic torch relay here led to financial losses to airlines, railways and BPO centres, according to estimates by an industry body Friday. “Nearly 300 corporate executives missed their evening and night flights due to heavy jams arising out of the torch relay,” Venugopal Dhoot, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), said in a statement.
About 500 passengers also missed their evening and night trains due to traffic congestions on most roads leading to the New Delhi, Old Delhi and Nizammudin railway stations, Dhoot added.
Long distance road traffic also suffered heavily as travellers could not report on time at various inter-state bus terminals due to the traffic restrictions imposed by the police because of the rally.
Hospitality industry staff and all those who work at night reported at least five hours later than their reporting time, said Dhoot.
Thursday’s torch rally in the Indian capital took place amid protests by Tibetans opposed to Chinese rule over their homeland as well as to the Beijing Olympic games.
