NTPC targets 10,000MW in south India by 2017
April 30th, 2010 - 7:26 pm ICT by IANSHyderabad, April 30 (IANS) Power utility NTPC said Friday it is planning to produce over 10,000 MW in south India by 2017.
The company currently has an installed capacity of 5,460 MW in the region against a total capacity of 31,704 MW in the country.
It has drawn up plans to add 2,490 MW of electricity by the end of 11th five-year plan (2007-12) and another 8,350 MW in the 12th plan (2012-17).
“The total installed capacity in the south by the end of 12th plan is expected to be 15,300-16,300 MW,” said A.N. Dave, NTPC regional executive director (South).
He said a 4,000 MW super thermal power project is coming up at Kudgi in Bijapur district of Karnataka at a cost of Rs.16,910 crore.
The stage-I of the project will have three units of 800 MW while the phase-II will comprise two units of 800 MW.
The Vallur thermal power project near Chennai will produce 1,000 MW as will also the Simhadri super thermal power plant in Andhra Pradesh.
NTPC will also set up the Marakkanam super thermal power project in Tamil Nadu. It will have two units each for generating 1,000 MW of power.
Dave said topography and geo-technical studies are on for the phase-II of the Kayamkulam project in Kerala to generate 1,950 MW.
