Now, court cases to prevent power theft in Haryana
February 15th, 2011 - 2:25 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Feb 15 (IANS) Haryana government’s power distribution agency Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) will lodge power theft complaints in court as part of a special campaign, an official said. “We will register complaints about power thefts in specially designated courts under the provisions of the Electricity Act 2003. Besides, informers will also be suitably rewarded. A sum of about Rs.50 lakh has been given as incentive to those giving information about theft of electricity in the state,” said an official DHBVN spokesperson.
“So far, during the current financial year, we have detected 13,145 cases of electricity thefts and imposed penalty worth over Rs.32 crore on the erring consumers. We also sent reports to police against 7,183 consumers who had failed to pay the penalty amount in time,” he added.
According to official records, the maximum cases of power thefts were reported from Hisar circle (4,214 cases), followed by Faridabad (3,161 cases) and Bhiwani (2,263 cases) circles.
DHBVN gives 40 percent of the recovered amount of penalty to the person who gives information about a theft.
