Nokia seeks price correction in 3G services
January 17th, 2012 - 5:56 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Kolkata, Jan 17 (IANS) The world’s largest cellphone maker Nokia Tuesday asked for a quick price correction in 3G services in India to make it affordable to the lower-end consumers.
“Pricing has to be corrected (for better penetration of 3G services). At the lower-end prices have to be right,” Nokia India’s head (services marketing) Jasmeet Gandhi told reporters here.
“A lot of consumers in India want to future proof themselves in terms of technology at the right price point. So when the pricing of 3G will be affordable, they will definitely go for it. And we have seen this happen in many categories,” Gandhi said.
He said price correction in 3G services should happen quickly because the pressure was definitely on the operators.
The 3G technology platform, positioned as “faster” service, was believed to revolutionise mobile experience through high-speed internet, video-calls, interactive gaming and mobile TV. But the percentage of actual users is lower than what was expected.
Gandhi, however, said currently prevailing high prices of 3G services were not affecting the sales of smart phones.
“Because people who buy smart phones at the high-end can afford 3G…t is not an issue. I think in smart phones segment 3G penetration is very decent,” he stated.
Informing that feature phones were the volume driver for Nokia, Gandhi said the company would go on investing in the handsets which were 3G enabled.
