No weddings in 60 MCD community halls due to Games
August 14th, 2010 - 11:26 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 14 (IANS) To the shock of hosts of 400 wedding parties, scheduled between Aug 15 and Oct 15 in Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) community halls, the civic agency has decided hand over these building to house security personnel on Commonwealth Games duty.
The civic agency made about 400 bookings for weddings between Aug 15 and Oct 15 in its 60 community halls.
Now, during this period, the agency has decided to reserve these halls for accommodation of officials of Sports Authority of India and paramilitary forces who will guard the capital during the Games.
Speaking to IANS, a senior MCD official confirmed the piquant situation.
“MCD holds full responsibility for the confusion. With these community halls taken up as temporary accommodation for the paramilitary forces and the SAI officials, MCD should have informed the people who booked the halls in advance,” said an official, on condition of anonymity.
The halls were mostly booked a year in advance for weddings. But the MCD set aside the bookings and earmarked them for Games two months ago, leading to confusion, he said.
Out of the 60 community centres, 49 community halls will be given to Delhi Police for use as temporary homes for paramilitary forces. The remaining 11, will be given to Sports Authority of India (SAI) for the sporting event between Oct 3-14.
The corporation official also said: “We are trying to solve the problem amicably within a week by holding discussion with the concerned people in various zonal offices, may be we will ask the hosts to change their wedding venue to MCD parks or farmhouses nearby.”
Over 60 farmhouses and 100 MCD parks are available around the city for hosting wedding parties.
