No shortage of LPG during festive season, assures HPCL
October 25th, 2010 - 10:33 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, Oct 25 (IANS) There will not be any shortage of domestic cooking gas in the pre-Diwali season and temporary backlogs will be cleared by month end, public sector oil marketing company Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) Monday assured people.
Subir Roy Choudhury, chairman and managing director of HPCL said: “The country faces such a situation during festive season, as many people resort to panic buying fearing shortage of supply.”
The demand for cooking gas also rises during the festive season, he said.
“India currently imports 2.5 million tonnes of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), which is scheduled to go up substantially in the coming years with the implementation of the Rajiv Gandhi LPG Vitarak Yojana,” he added.
The new import facilities being set up at important ports, including Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), New Mangalore and Kandla, will handle increased volume of imports, he said.
Roy Choudhury also allayed fears of Mumbai facing LPG shortage.
“The city has excellent import infrastructure, besides housing the two refineries of the Bharat Petroleum and the Hindustan Petroleum,” he said.
As part of the drive to ensure timely availability of domestic cooking gas, oil companies have set up vigilance wings to prevent diversion of subsidised LPG for commercial use.
