Washington County, Dec 4 (THAINDIAN NEWS) There is no effect of the recession on Whitney Wreath. Instead of handing out pink slips to their employees, they are hiring an additional 250 more people this year, in an unprecedented revival of the industry. Whitney Wreath in Machias has almost doubled its business this year, courtesy a new contract with LL Bean.

“When this opportunity came along, I paused for a moment thinking that’s a big jump, but absolutely, no question, will do,” said owner David Whitney.

The revival due to the new contract started in April, and in a short span of six months, the company created about 250 new jobs.

”There hasn’t been a lot of jobs in the area and to have a business that’s local get a big contract like this and hire so many employees,” said Laura Morse of Cherryfield.

People are amazed at the new jobs, and are surprised at being hired by Whitney Wreath, even though they had placed their names in a dozen places for work. They are also thinking that the hiring will have a positive effect on other industries as well and the whole economic situation will then improve as a whole.

The owner of the company is also amazed at the positive response that he is getting. He is swamped with flowers and letters from people because of the jobs that his company has created in the Washington County.
