Shimla, March 17 (IANS) The central government has rejected Himacahal Pradesh’s proposal to allow Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre officers in the state to wear a trendy blue uniform in place of the traditional khaki, Chief Minister Prem Kumar said Thursday.

“A communication from the central government was received only Wednesday,” Dhumal, who also holds the home portfolio, told the state assembly.

He said the state had sent the proposal to the central government Jan 31.

“Their approval was mandatory as any issue related to change of uniform of IPS officers come under the purview of the IPS (Uniform) Rules of 1954,” the chief minister said.

The 16,000-strong Himachal Pradesh police force in January this year switched to a new blue uniform as part of an image makeover initiative.

The outfit includes dark blue trousers, light blue shirt and blue beret. Accessories such as shoes and belts remain black. Both men and women wear the same uniform.

West Bengal and Goa are the other Indian states to have replaced the traditional khaki for its police personnel with other uniforms.
