New security system for 38 Mumbai railway stations: Kamat
September 28th, 2011 - 6:54 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, Sep 28 (IANS) To further strengthen surveillance at sensitive and vulnerable railway stations in Mumbai, 38 suburban stations have been selected for an integrated security system programme, local MP Gurudas Kamat said here Wednesday.
“In a recent letter from Vinay Mittal, the chairman of the Railway Board, he assured that to further strengthen surveillance mechanism at sensitive and vulnerable stations of the country, including Mumbai suburban stations, an integrated security system has been envisaged at an approved cost of Rs.353 crore,” said Kamat, who represents Mumbai North-West.
“According to the letter, one of the prominent feature of the system is Internet Protocol Based CCTV surveillance system and 38 stations of Mumbai suburban area have been identified for implementation of the system,” he added.
However, it has not yet been indicated as to which suburban railway stations on the central and western lines of the city will be included in the programme. Mumbai has 46 suburban railway stations on the central and western lines.
Kamat had, soon after the July 13 bombings in Mumbai, written to the prime minister expressing disappointment that over 5,000 CCTVs to be installed in several parts of Mumbai had still not been placed.
“I have also been assured that the existing 1,445 CCTV cameras which are already installed over Mumbai suburban railway stations for round-the-clock surveillance against suspicious activities/persons and unclaimed objects, are fully functional and monitored on day-to-day basis,” he said.
