New policy to focus on public transport
August 12th, 2010 - 10:30 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS) Formulation of a national urban transport policy, financing of buses and a bus rapid transit system project are some of the steps taken by the central government to improve urban public transport, parliament was informed Thursday.
In a written reply to Dhiraj Prasad Sahu (Congress) in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Urban Development Saugata Roy said setting up of traffic transit management centres under urban transport under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and sanction of Metro railway projects of various cities are some other steps.
He added that the national urban transport policy envisages prioritization of investment in public transport, pedestrianisation and non motorised transport, land use and transport intergration, intelligent transport systems, and transport demand management.
