September 27th, 2010 - 8:51 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 27 (IANS) With just six days left for the Commonwealth Games, Delhi Metro is racing against time to open the Central Secretariat-Badarpur link. On Monday it extended its trial run till Sarita Vihar.
According to Metro officials, the 21-km standard gauge line is expected to be opened to public by the end of this month.
“The opening of this line is important as it provides connectivity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium,” where the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games will take, an official told IANS.
He added that the line would be extended up to the Badarpur border before the Games start Oct 3.
“As of today the trial run has been extended to Jasola and Sarita Vihar stations and to Sarita Vihar Depot covering a total of 15 km,” he added.
The whole stretch, on which the trial is being conducted at present, covers 13 metro stations. The trial run was extended from Lajpat Nagar to Okhla Sep 16.
Delhi Metro runs a fleet of 129 trains on a network of 138 km that has 117 stations. The average daily ridership on weekdays is about 14 lakh.
By next month, Delhi Metro will have a network of over 185 km and about 135 stations and will carry about 20 lakh commuters every day.
