NCW team visits violence-hit Greater Noida village
May 12th, 2011 - 2:06 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 12 (IANS) A team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Thursday visited the Bhatta Parsaul village in Uttar Pradesh following reports that women were assaulted by police during the agitation by farmers for higher compensation for their land.
Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, NCW acting chairperson Yasmeen Abrar had earlier said they would issue a showcause notice to Uttar Pradesh’s director general of police on the issue of police personnel allegedly misbehaving with women in the village in Greater Noida near the national capital.
“A team of six members of the NCW, led by the acting chairperson, left for Bhatta Parsaul this morning to enquire into the alleged police brutality on women. They will come back and prepare a report on the same,” an NCW official told IANS.
“If the allegations are found to be true, then strict action will be taken,” the official added.
On Saturday, police and agitating farmers fought a pitched battle in Bhatta Parsaul that left four dead, including two policemen.
The farmers are agitating for higher compensation for land acquired for the 156-km Yamuna Expressway, linking New Delhi with Agra.
