Nafed monitoring markets to check onion prices
November 26th, 2010 - 11:34 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 26 (IANS) Agri-cooperative Nafed is monitoring the rates of onions to keep prices under check, and increased arrivals from Maharashtra will ease prices, the agriculture ministry said Friday.
“Nafed is monitoring rates of onions in different mandis on daily basis to keep onion prices under check,” a release from the ministry said.
Heavy rains in Nasik (Maharashtra) and Alwar (Rajasthan), the procurement region of the vegetable, were reported to be reasons for the supply crunch.
However, the ministry has informed that clear weather in the procurement region since Thursday is likely to see increased arrivals of onion stocks in the market.
“Nafed and NCCF are selling onions in retail at the rate of Rs.25 per kg through its outlets in Delhi,” the statement said.
The ministry also said that Nafed has imposed an Minimum Export Price (MEP) of $525 per tonne and “this has brought down the exports of onions, thereby adding to the domestic availability of the commodity”.
The wholesale prices of onion in Maharashtra is ruling between Rs.500 and Rs. 2,200 per quintal and in Delhi’s Azadpur vegetable wholesale market is between Rs.1,500 and Rs.3,250 per quintal.
