Mumbai’s excise, customs collections cheer up Mukherjee

Mumbai, Dec 23 (IANS) Excise and customs collections in Mumbai till November during this fiscal have been satisfactory, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Thursday after a meeting with chief commissioners.”Mumbai’s indirect tax collections up to November stood at Rs.56,000 crore. Customs duty collection from April-November was Rs.28,000 crore, while central excise collections amounted to Rs.16,000 crore,” he told reporters after the meeting
Mukherjee observed that high tax collections in Mumbai reflected buoyancy in the economy. “Mumbai contributes 35 percent of India’s indirect tax collections to the exchequer,” he said.
He said he was hopeful of meeting the tax targets this fiscal.
On the high onion prices across the country, Mukherjee hoped that more bulbs would be imported shortly to meet the shortfall.
“Non-food items are also contributing to the current high inflation,” he said.
