More escalators in two busy Metro stations
July 8th, 2010 - 8:18 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, July 8 (IANS) The Delhi Metro Rail Corp (DMRC) will install more escalators in two of its busiest stations, Chandni Chowk and Rajiv Chowk, to make travel more comfortable, an official said Thursday.
Delhi Metro chief E. Sreedharan inspected the two stations and asked the officials to install additional escalators.
On an average, Chandni Chowk station sees a footfall of over 100,000 while nearly 375,000 people use the inter-change Rajiv Chowk station a day.
Chandni Chowk now has five entrances, with gate 5, which opens towards Chandni Chowk, recording the maximum rush. Gate 1 towards Town Hall is the least used.
Sreedharan asked the DMRC officials to keep gate 5 exclusively for exit and gate 1 for entry. “This would be convenient for the passengers,” said a DMRC official.
At least 14 additional ticket counters will be introduced at gate 1 and two new escalators will be installed.
“As for Rajiv Chowk station, four additional escalators are to come up, out of which two have become operational from today (Thursday). The other two will function within 10 days,” the official said.
A high capacity lift will also come up at Chawri Bazar station.
