Miraculous escape for 140 AI passengers (Lead)
November 9th, 2010 - 11:30 pm ICT by IANSJammu, Nov 9 (IANS) More than 140 passengers and crew members of an Air India flight from Srinagar to Delhi had a miraculous escape after the aircraft’s tyre caught fire while taking off from Jammu airport Tuesday evening, officials said.
According to airport sources, the tyre caught fire while the plane was about to take off but the pilot managed to bring the aircraft to a halt.
The passengers were evacuated safely.
“There were 145 people in the aircraft, of them more than 90 were Haj pilgrims,” said a source.
Some of the passengers were scheduled to take a connecting flight to Jeddah, sources said.
The flight had a stopover in Jammu, from where it picked up about 30 Delhi-bound passengers.
An alternative aircraft was being arranged for the stranded passengers, lodged overnight in different hotels in the city.
This is the second time since June that a major disaster has been averted at Jammu airport. In June, an Indigo flight overshot the runway.
