Militants now target state departments and officials in Manipur
April 22nd, 2011 - 4:21 pm ICT by ANIImphal, Apr 22 (ANI): After targeting employees in the banking and hospitality sectors, militants in Manipur are now targeted various state departments and officials.
Recently, suspected cadres of the proscribed NSCN (IM) ambushed the convoy of Wungnaoshang Keishang, an MLA from Phungyar Sub division in Ukhrul district.
The MLA escaped unhurt, but six more security persons were injured in the firing.
“The insurgents ambushed us from all sides. We did not have a chance to get out from the vehicle. The driver was the first to be hit. Then I jumped down from the vehicle and took my position. I realized that we were surrounded on all sides. We were concerned about protecting Wungnaoshang Keishang otherwise he would have been killed,” said injured security personnel. .In another incident, miscreants set fire to the office of Youth Affairs and Sports Department at Khuman Lampak in Imphal.
The incident took place when no staff members were present at the office except one accounts officer and a watchman. The culprits walked in the office and set ablaze the documents related to the cashier, training and coaching in the Establishment Section and the accounts department.
They also burnt many files in the drivers’ room. Later, the miscreants also set aflame two Bolero jeeps parked in the Department’s garage.
“When the incident took place I was inside my office room. Then some people came and called me out. I inquired that what happened and they told me that there was fire in the next room. But till now we have no idea who did it,” said, T.Tuizar, accounts Officer, Youth Affairs and Sports Department.
It is not the first time that the state department or people associated with it have been targeted.
