Metro carries over 31,000 spectators for Games’ close
October 14th, 2010 - 11:03 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 14 (IANS) Over half of the nearly 60,000 spectators at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Thursday used the Delhi Metro to reach the venue for the closing ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games.
According to a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson, the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Jangpura and Jorbagh metro stations recorded a total ridership of 40,000 people till 7 p.m. Of these, 31,300 people were spectators who used these stations to reach the stadium.
The Jawaharlal Nehru stadium metro station recorded the maximum ridership of 15,700 spectators while 9,100 and 6,500 people used the Jangpura and Jorbagh metro stations, respectively.
“A similar number of people are expected to use these stations for going back to their homes after the closing ceremony,” the spokesperson said.
For the closing ceremony, the Delhi Metro also put up additional signages in the stations indicating the nearest entry gate numbers of the stadium. Repeated announcements about the same were also being made at the stations.
Over 150 personnel were deputed at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Central Secretariat and Jangpura metro stations to assist the commuters.
As many as 38,000 people used the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Metro station (25,000) and the Jangpura Metro station (13,000) to reach the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the Games opening ceremony Oct 3.
The Delhi metro had run over 100 extra train trips on all the lines of the network that day and the services had continued till well past midnight.
The spokesperson said that DMRC chief E. Sreedharan inspected the arrangements for Metro services during the closing ceremony Thursday morning.
