McDonald’s offers $3 for recalled Shrek glass
June 9th, 2010 - 7:56 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Jun 9 (THAINDIAN NEWS) McDonald’s has offered to pay premium of up to $3 for the return of the Shrek drinking glasses. An official at McDonald’s said that the recall is in effect because the paint used on the glass contains Cadmium. Cadmium is a toxic chemical that can be very harmful. The paint can come off the glass, onto the glass user’s hands and thus cause harm.
The company sold the glasses for $1.99 when there food was purchased along with it, and it was also sold for $2.49 when there was no food purchased for it. The glass is painted with characters from the hit movie “Shrek Forever After”. The scheme was very successful and the company sold millions of the glasses.
The company said that customers could return the glasses to any of its restaurants for the premium payment. The payment can be received without showing the receipt of the purchase of the Shrek glass. The premium payment is rare in the history of product recall in the United States of America.
The company revealed that it sold about 7.5 million of the glasses and said the premium is meant to compensate customers for the inconvenience caused by the recall.
The recall was announced after the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that tests carried out on the Shrek glasses show that there were small levels of Cadmium in the paint used on the glass.
