MCD adopts ‘zero tolerance’ against debris on roads
July 15th, 2010 - 12:48 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 14 (IANS) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Wednesday warned other civic agencies against digging up the capital’s roads, except where required for Commonwealth Games projects, and said accumulation of debris along roads will not be tolerated.
“Except projects related to the Games, no agency will be allowed to cut roads for any other purpose. If anyone indulges in road cutting, an FIR will be registered against the contractor and officer of the concerned agency,” said Jagdish Mamgain, chairman of the MCD’s working committee.
The civic body also put forth a zero tolerance policy against accumulation of debris on the city roads, particularly those leading to stadiums and Games venues.
Mamgain said MCD officials have been asked to monitor the clearing of debris strewn on roads as also the status of drains and the rain water discharge system to avoid stagnation of rainwater.
He blamed the sewage department and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) besides electricity firms for digging newly-constructed roads without bothering to repair them.
The MCD has sanctioned Rs.544 lakh for manpower and necessary equipment to lift the debris from different areas, an official said.
“During the torrential rains (Monday), the role of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), public works department (PWD) and the Metro was not up to the mark. They were less prepared for the monsoon as the uncleared drains in their area created chaos across the city,” he added.
The Delhi High Court July 12 came down heavily on the MCD over the pathetic condition of the roads in the capital with just three months to go for the Commonwealth Games.
