Maytag dishwasherJune 4, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Home appliances giant Whirlpool’s Maytag unit has recalled 1.7 million dishwashers yesterday.

The cause of the recalling is the fire risk that the dishwashers posed. There were some faulty heating elements in the appliances that could heat up or even ignite.

The wake up call came after about twelve complaints of fire were received directly related to the product. On of these fires caused heavy damage, though no injuries have been reported.

The CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) which made the recall for Maytag, which is apart of Whirlpool Corp., has asked the users of the products to not use the recalled appliances any further and keep it unplugged. Maytag was bought by Whirlpool in 2006 for $1.8 billion.

This is Maytag’s second recall of over million appliances of the same category. Previously there was a recall of 1.6 million refrigerators for a similar risk.

For the users Whirlpool has offered a free in-home repair according to the user’s schedule. Plus if the customers choose a new dishwasher as replacement of the defective one there is a discount of $150 to $250 depending on the model.

The models hat were recalled were between the price range $250 to $900. The models included Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa and Crosley brand dishwasher.

These were sold between February 2006 to April 2010 and had black, bisque and stainless steel front door panels. These were available in all appliance stores and Whirlpool showrooms.

A spokesperson for Whirlpool has revealed that the company has set aside $75 million to tackle the technical defect and cover the total cost of the recall.
